What Is Hypoallergenic Makeup – And Why Do You Need It?

What Is Hypoallergenic Makeup – And Why Do You Need It?

If you often suffer from sensitive skin issues, including redness, flakiness, dryness, or bumps, it can be a major struggle to find products that work without causing further reactions. Plus, wearing conventional makeup for hours at a time can be irritating.

Love makeup but not the allergic reaction? You’re in luck! Fortunately, the beauty industry has embraced sensitive skin-friendly products. Introducing hypoallergenic makeup, the perfect solution for people with sensitive skin.

What is hypoallergenic makeup?

You have likely heard the term 'hypoallergenic makeup' but might not know exactly what it means. The term hypoallergenic is commonly used when describing makeup products that contain fewer irritants, e.g., allergens, than normal products. Makeup can contain irritants such as fragrance, parabens, and dyes. That is why many makeup lovers look for the word 'hypoallergenic' on the label.

Speaking of dyes, many red pigments are the top culprit for itchy or swollen eyelids. So if you suffer from these symptoms, discontinue use of eye shadows, eyeliners or mascaras that contains red pigments. Not sure how to tell? Anything with that is reddish brown, burgundy or reddish purple usually contain red pigment(s) in their formula.

Who is it good for?

People with sensitive skin who are easily irritated by chemicals and fragrances generally choose hypoallergenic makeup. If your skin is healing and sensitive due to an injury or recent surgery, hypoallergenic makeup could be a great option for you.

What’s more, if you have recently experienced itchy, watery eyes, and inflamed skin during hay fever season, you might want to opt for products that are hypoallergenic, so that you will not aggravate the condition even further. Others might simply prefer using products containing less harsh chemicals or synthetic preservatives, knowing that they are less likely to pollute the earth.

Read the label

Currently, the term hypoallergenic does not have a legal definition. Because of this, a makeup product's label itself isn't a guarantee that it won't cause irritation to your skin. This formula should, however, be an indicator of little to no irritation. Be sure to carefully read the ingredients if there is anything you are not sure about.

If you are sensitive to fragrances, look for products labelled "fragrance-free" (not unscented, as that simply means the item contains neutral fragrances intended to mask other smells). Other common culprits include preservatives such as parabens and methylisothiazolinone, as well as moisturizers such as petrolatum or mineral oil. Likewise, a lengthy ingredient list usually indicates the presence of a lot of potential allergy triggers.

It is important not to confuse hypoallergenic with the term "clean." Although most organic makeup products avoid some of the ingredients found in hypoallergenic products, many natural ingredients, including essential oils, can irritate the skin. Hypoallergenic makeup may be exactly what you need if your skin is easily irritated.
