Who is Rochelle Okoye?
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Rochelle Okoye has been leading an incredible life from a very young age. After her family moved to England, Rochelle was a member of the Great Britain Gymnastics Team from the age of 9. With a goal to compete at the 2000 Summer Olympics, she earned the award for ‘The Top Sports Person in England: under the age of 13 category’ for 2 consecutive years. However, when Rochelle turned 15 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) changed the age of eligibility to 16, for the 2000 Olympics.
The family then decided that the best decision would be to return to Canada, so Rochelle could compete with the Canadian team. Instead, Rochelle resigned from gymnastics to focus on her studies and went on to graduate high school at 16 and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of Northern British Columbia in 2006, at the age of 20. Although Rochelle worked in her field for 2 years, she decided instead to return to sports as a professional boxer.
Rochelle then decided to take her skills and talents into the film industry. She is now one of the top stunt women in the industry, acting alongside well-known Hollywood names. A potentially fatal accident on set left doctors telling Rochelle she would never walk again, yet through her persistent commitment to healing she was able to return to work in the film industry, which is a truly extraordinary achievement. Rochelle is also the best selling author of “With Every Damn Brick,” a motivational speaker, who gave a powerful TEDx Talk in 2018, and the co-owner of Tristar Vancouver Martial Arts.
Sara: Please share your experience during this photoshoot? What really stood out for you?
Rochelle: I had so much fun during this photo shoot! I really loved how the products are all natural, since I’m an all natural, organic person. I also loved how easy they are to apply and how light they feel on your face. It felt like I was wearing no makeup.
Sara: As an athlete all your life, I would imagine that discipline plays a very important role in your career. Why do you think one needs to be disciplined to achieve their goal?
Rochelle: Discipline in my opinion is an extremely important part of success. It’s something I have carried with me since I was a child and has been instilled through all of my athletic endeavours and upbringing. Discipline is being willing to do something over and over again despite not wanting to do it. It’s understanding that the struggle is temporary. Sacrifices are like investments, you have to give up the short term comfort for the long term win.
Sara: We chatted briefly about your healthy diet. What are some tips you could share with someone who is trying to incorporate healthier eating habits into their life?
Rochelle: Our western world is full of artificial foods, preservatives, hormones, chemicals, and so much more. It is part of the reason why disease and illness is so prevalent in our society. I highly recommend following an all natural, organic diet, if one can afford it. I know it can be expensive, so for those who are afforded the privilege of eating organic, eat organic and for those who can not eat all natural, I always suggest following a Mother Earth diet.
If it comes from the earth, eat it. If it comes in a box and you can’t pronounce the ingredients, don’t eat it. And for those that can’t do organic but can do all natural, learn the foods with the highest GMO/chemical content and avoid eating those when necessary (switch those out to organic). Wash all your produce and fruits in an apple cIder vinegar and water bath for 15 minutes to remove any chemicals and pesticides on the outside. I suggest doing that with all produce and fruit regardless of organic or not. And enjoy!
Sara: What is your favourite Amaterasu makeup product so far and why?
Rochelle: I’m really loving the Liquid Eyeliner. I never wear eyeliner because I have the hardest time putting it on, but the Amaterasu liquid liner is so incredibly easy. I get a perfect line every time! View the best liquid eyeliner on the market.

Sara: Your TEDx Talk was so inspiring and it takes so much strength to continue charging forward like you did. Can you briefly summarize what your talk and your book, “With Every Damn Brick,” are about for those who might not be familiar with your story?
Rochelle: My book is called “With Every Damn Brick” and I teach people how to stand in their power through overcoming their adversities. I take the reader through the acronym POWER and I share my own experiences and adversities and explain how I overcame them. At the end of each chapter there is homework for the reader to apply to their own life, as well as a summary of the lessons learned in each chapter.
And my TEDx talk is called, “How to Turn Your Pain Into Power” and can be found on the official TEDx YouTube channel. Again, I take the audience through the acronym POWER and I explain how each word that relates to the acronym POWER applies to being able to stand in Your own power, to live your authentic truth and create the life of your dreams.
It was an honour and a privilege to work with Rochelle. We are so grateful for the opportunity to get to know her and share her amazing story.
